NAUTILUS 1ST GENERATION
& HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING
At it's inception in the 1970's, Nautilus 1st generation equipment was king of the gym.
Favoured by golden era Bodybuilding greats, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and his rivals, Nautilus 1st Generation was, and still is undisputedly the safest and most effective strength building equipment ever produced.
In conjunction with High Intensity Training (HIT) practices it is also the most efficient training equipment, yielding measurable results with as little as one 30 minute session per week.
ARTHUR JONES
CREATOR OF NAUTILUS
Arthur Jones, a genius often misunderstood, dedicated 30 years of his life to developing Nautilus 1st Generation equipment's unique cam system which sets these machines apart, in terms of their safety and efficacy, from everything that has come before or since .
His unwavering belief that there must be a safer, more effective and efficient way to induce muscular hypertrophy than the accepted method of the time, spending hours a day with free-weights in the gym, led him to develop the unique weight leveraging cams, designed to mimic the natural strength curve of the human body throughout the resistance movement patterns.
Jones is pictured here, demonstrating his famous Pullover Machine.
THE NAUTILUS ADVANTAGE
Arthur Jones' patented cams, curved or eccentric wheels that change the mechanical advantage of the lift throughout the range of motion, were a groundbreaking innovation in strength training equipment design.
With cams that accurately mimic the natural strength curve of the muscle, Nautilus 1st Generation Machines are able to provide a variable resistance that increases as the lifter approaches the strongest part of the range of motion and decreases as the lifter approaches the weakest part of the range of motion.
This variation in resistance achieves several benefits:
- Allowing for a more consistent and controlled movement.
- Reducing the risk of injury by reducing the stress on joints and muscles at the extremes of the range of motion.
- Enabling lifters to work with heavier weights and achieve greater muscle growth and strength gains.
The cam design was a key factor in the success of Nautilus machines and their ability to safely and effectively develop strength and enhance muscular physique.
HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING
In addition to developing the most effective machines for strength training, Arthur Jones extensively researched the most effective training techniques. Through his decades of research Jones determined that the single most effective training method was High-Intensity Training (HIT), in combination with his Nautilus Machines.
HIT focuses on performing quality weight training repetitions to the point of momentary muscular failure.
The primary principals of HIT are:
High effort: Pushing muscles to failure.
Brief workouts: Short, intense sessions.
Recovery: Emphasizing rest between workouts
This method emphasizes short but highly intense workouts, contrasting with traditional high-volume routines.
Jones’s approach was revolutionary, advocating for one set per exercise to maximum effort, rather than multiple sets, this training philosophy was encapsulated in the Colorado Experiment, a bodybuilding study conducted by Arthur Jones in collaboration with researchers at Colorado State University in May 1973.
The experiment aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of high-intensity training using the innovative Nautilus machines. The main test subject was professional bodybuilder Casey Viator.
The study produced remarkable muscle gains of 63.21 lbs (28.6kgs) in just 28 days.

THE NAUTILUS DIFFERENCE AT
LPZmethod
Arthur Jones designed 5 of his Nautilus machines to seamlessly incorporate the pre-exhaust method with High Intensity Training (HIT).
The pre-exhaust method involves performing an isolation exercise to fatigue a specific muscle group before immediately moving to a compound exercise that targets the same muscles.
This technique ensures that the targeted muscles are fully exhausted, leading to more effective workouts.
We are the only commercial facility in Australia to have within our fully restored collection of 24 Nautilus pieces, all 5 of Jones' pre-exhaust machines.
Many of our machines are also fitted with infimetric attachments. When activated these attachments enable the user to create resistance by having one body part work against another, rather than using external weights.
Infimetric training is an incredibly safe an effective way to build strength in vulnerable populations or rebuild balanced strength during injury rehabilitation.
Our clients Nautilus training is fully programmed, based on their individual needs, goals and desired training frequency.
We advocate and teach the HIT method, enabling our clients top see real measurable progress session to session training just 30minutes once per week.
However, if your preference is to train more frequently we will provide you with the most balanced and effective programming for your desired training frequency.
